We’d like to start with the conclusion to save your time and money: If it’s too good to be true, then it is too good to be true. Many people wish that shedding extra pounds could be as easy as popping a pill. This means they don’t have to exercise and eat healthily. Some even use pills to supplement an otherwise healthy lifestyle to boost results. However, is this a smart decision? Our health experts give it a big thumb’s down. Despite the well-known risks associated with weight loss supplements, the demand for these products is continually rising, especially among those with eating disorders. In fact, according to Eating Behaviours, 50 percent of individuals with eating disorders use over-the-counter weight loss supplements, herbal supplements, and even prescription drugs to lose weight.
WHAT IS A DIET PILL?
A diet pill or weight loss supplement is any product that can be taken orally and contains herbs, nutrients or other ingredients to add to your everyday diet.
Note that not all supplements are designed for weight loss. For example, supplements containing nutrients or compounds that are recommended for a healthy lifestyle, such as omega-3 fatty acids, minerals, herbs, amino acids, enzymes, organ products, glandular products or vitamins can increase the nutritional content of your day’s diet and amp your overall health.
Common red flags to look out for are words such as “weight loss”, “diet” or “quick weight loss” as they promise unrealistic results and may promote unhealthy behavior. Just because a weight loss supplement is sold in a fancy packaging or local drugstore, does not mean it is safe to consume.
What most people are not aware of is that most products marketed as weight loss supplements are not regulated by the FDA, unless they contain a new ingredient.
The Dietary Supplement and Health Education Act of 1994 states that it is the responsibility of the manufacturer to ensure that the supplement is safe. Now, we are quite aware that most people aren’t masters of their words. Numerous manufacturers have been making false claims and promise about their products, producing their pills under risky circumstances, and adding pharmaceutical ingredients to products.
HOW DO DIETS PILLS WORK?
There’s no shortage of options when it comes to weight loss supplements. Most weight loss pill companies provide claims for their ingredients such as:
1. Appetite suppression
2. Increased metabolism
3. Increasing feeling of fullness so you eat less
4. Slowing down fat production
5. Preventing fat absorption from the foods you eat
Do any of these sound familiar?
Unfortunately, studies show that even if these pills do increase your weight-loss potential, the long-term risks associated with them will prevent you from picking up a pill again. Keep reading to find out what these risks are.
Why are weight loss supplements harmful to human health?
Note that some dietary supplements may be harmless and could even be effective at increasing your satiation. However, several popular ingredients seen in popular weight loss products have been banned by the FDA due to detrimental side effects like:
a) Kidney problems
b) Liver damage
d) Behavioral problems
f) Increase in heart rate
g) Heart palpitations
h) High blood pressure
j) Rectal bleeding
k) Vomiting and nausea and many more
Each consumer needs to research each product thoroughly and measure the risks vs. benefits before purchasing. Be sure to speak with your doctor before trying any supplement, especially if you have any existing health concerns or if you’re pregnant or nursing.
Can I lose weight without supplements?
Sometimes weight loss can feel like an uphill battle – it’s just so difficult! We see shiny ads that portray how easy it is to lose those few (or more than a few) extra pounds without getting off the couch, and we are dazzled by them! We try them out but they don’t seem to be working for us. Have you ever wondered why that is? For one thing, weight loss supplements do not work! According to a recent study, it was concluded that there is no such thing as a magic pill. None of the hundreds of supplements they tested showed any actual signs of being effective. The most effective method to Lose Weight Fast Without Diet Pills Or Exercise. Now that we have this out of the way, let’s look at a few proven easy ways that you can help you lose weight fast!
1. Chew slowly
We’ve all heard the age-old saying that we should chew each bite 30 times. Even though “30” might be taking it too far, there is some merit to it all. Have you noticed that after a big meal, you feel full, but after a few minutes have passed, you feel like you have overeaten? That’s because when you eat, your body releases hormones, which tell the brain that you are no longer hungry. Funnily enough, that process takes about 20 minutes. So chewing slowly makes us eat slowly, which in turn prevents us from overeating.
2. Drink a glass of water when you’re hungry
Here is a nifty little trick – whenever you feel hungry, drink a glass of water, and wait for a bit. If you are still hungry afterward, feel free to eat. If not, wait for the next mealtime. As amazing as it may sound, many times our brains mistake simple thirst for hunger. That is because both needs are controlled by the hypothalamus, and this proximity confuses the smartest part of our bodies. Furthermore, a study conducted in the UK proved that people who drank a glass of water 30 minutes before a meal, lost on average more weight than those who didn’t, considering that both groups ate the same meal.
3. Cut out the snacks
This one is a toughie! Whether it’s sitting down to watch something or simply staying awake during that boring online meeting, snacks have become an integral part of our lives. The sad truth is that in most cases they are quite bad for us. We could, of course, opt for a healthier choice, but it would still be better for your digestive system to get used to an eating pattern. That’s when the magic happens!
4. Plan your meals
As mentioned above, having an eating pattern is important. Your body needs to know that it will receive food regularly so that it will not go into an emergency mode and start storing fat for rainy days. Additionally, having a meal plan will help you make better nutritional choices, and it will prevent you from overeating. Furthermore, it will save you some money, and who doesn’t like that?
5. Try intermittent fasting
Intermittent fasting has proven to be more effective than any other “diet” out there, and it allows you to eat the same amount of food that you normally would. There is just one condition – you have to do it within a given time frame. One of the most popular methods is called Leangains and it asks you to fast for 14-16 hours in the day and eat throughout the rest of the time. In other words, this means skipping breakfast. The rest of the meals are quite the same, so you can still plan them out, and enjoy them with your family.
Fasting can be quite difficult for some people, and if you have medical conditions, you should consult a doctor before trying any of it. However, if you’re a healthy individual, give fasting a try, and see all the wonders it can do!
Ultimately, losing weight is a complex process – exercise is just a small part of it, and we already know that supplements don’t work. What we do know is that you can achieve your goal by taking the simple steps described above. Good luck!
